Should You ‘Pop’ The Top?

The 1950s and 1960s saw a new type of American house gain popularity – the “ranch” or “rambler” style. Loosely based on Frank Lloyd Wright’s famous Prairie houses, the classic rambler is a sprawling single story house with gabled or hipped roofs and wide overhangs. Because the footprint (area of the first floor) is much larger than typical two story homes of the same age, they can be the perfect starting point for a second story addition.

Adding a second story to your existing rambler can be a cost effective way to add needed space, but that is not its only advantage. It is often desirable to reconfigure the entire floor plan with better flow and modern open spaces. Please be aware that a pop top addition involves removing your existing roof, meaning rain will soak everything before the new upper story and roof can be completed. For this reason, pop top additions are considered “full gut” projects. We advise our clients to take advantage of the full gut process by increasing ceiling heights, adding insulation, and replacing aging plumbing, electrical, and HVAC systems.
